Our Topic: Top Questions Fiction Authors Have About Native Americans (but you don’t know who to ask)
with Sarah Elisabeth Sawyer
Fiction authors who want to write about Native Americans face a challenging minefield riddled with dos and don’ts, and no clear answers. That is why Choctaw author and writing instructor Sarah Elisabeth Sawyer created the “Fiction Writing: American Indians” digital course. Her goal is to equip authors to write authentic stories that honor First American history and culture.
In this presentation, you’ll get clear answers to 9 questions for writing and publishing stories with Native characters. Sarah will tackle questions from authors like:
- What is the correct way to refer to Native Americans?
- Is it okay for authors who aren’t Native American to write about them?
- Can authors approach a tribal community for help when researching their story?
- What can authors do to ensure they don’t get it “wrong” and create a firestorm of controversy?
Join this live presentation for answers to these questions, and please bring your own. Sarah welcomes them all!
